Administration officials confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on prior threats linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

While the official did not specify which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by the public and pledged to contest the actions in court.

This is shameful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide critical services to the public nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be resolved soon.

During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, unions sought a temporary restraining order to block the administration from implementing any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official ordered the administration to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been recalled to carry out layoffs.

A report contended that a government shutdown restricts the ability of the administration to carry out firings, referencing guidance that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated prior to the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations took place on the same day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck covering the end of September but not the start of the current month, since funding expired at the beginning of the month.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate stated. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are continuing to be paid during the funding gap.
