During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, declaring “a new era” and an ambitious start to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Leader

The new political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Defying suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Steering by Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my ideals for fear of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Core Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing basic services: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and making sure smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
