Intensifying Rhetorical Battle Between Ethiopia and Eritrea Triggers Fears of Conflict

Increasing concerns have emerged over the possibility of warfare involving Horn of Africa neighbours, the Ethiopian government and the Eritrean government, as confrontational discourse has escalated in the last month.

What Did Ethiopia Said?

Ethiopia's, being landlocked, calls for passage to the sea coast through Eritrea has triggered a fierce rhetorical conflict.

PM Abiy Ahmed previously announced in last year that his country's access to the sea was an existential matter, statements that Eritrean authorities dismissed.

Ties between the neighboring nations have frequently been strained. After a decades-long struggle for freedom, Eritrea, which has a extensive maritime frontage, officially seceded from Ethiopia in 1993, rendering it without sea access.

Five years later, a border war erupted in which more than 100,000 people were killed.

Current Remarks from Ethiopia's Government

Abiy and army chief General Birhanu Jula have openly claimed sovereignty of Eritrean maritime facility of the port of Assab – some 60 km from the border - and hinted at the wish to capture it through military means.

In early September, the Prime Minister said Ethiopia's "blunder" of losing entry to the Red Sea as a because of Eritrean independence would be "rectified in the future".

Ethiopia's ambassador to neighboring Kenya, retired Gen Bacha Debele, said that the port was "Ethiopian property" and would be restored "by force".

Eritrean Response to the Claims

Despite ongoing threats from Ethiopia, Eritrea's reaction has been limited to concise remarks on social media from Communications Head the minister.

He has rejected Ethiopian requests for maritime entry calling it "risky" and a "toxic agenda" of "expansionism" – a approach of retaking lost territory.

Eritrean authorities cautioned on recently that attempts to legitimise "flagrant aggression" would have significant repercussions for Ethiopia and its neighbouring countries and is a "limit that should not be crossed|violated|breached".

Security Movements on the Region

Currently, there are few indications of large-scale army activities in the border areas between the both nations.

However, in Ethiopia, government media has broadcast training completions of thousands of cadets at different defense facilities.

The director of staff section of the military, General Hachalu, recently said in an conversation that the defense forces was in a "reliable position" as "many thousands of recruits" were enlisting, which he said was "a message to our adversaries".

Past Origins of the Dispute

For over fifty years from 1890, Eritrea was administered by colonial powers.

Following Italy's defeat, it was then controlled by the UK forces before turning into a federated part of Ethiopia.

However in the early 1960s Emperor Haile Selassie I cancelled this arrangement and the region became fully incorporated into the Ethiopian state.

A thirty-year civil war followed, concluding with the government's loss in 1991. Sovereignty was then confirmed by the population in a referendum in 1993.

Temporarily in the 1990s, there were friendly connections between the governments in Addis Ababa and Eritrea's capital, but they fell out over the exact location of their common border, leading to hostilities in 1998.

Even though this concluded in a truce in 2000, it was never fully implemented, and the two nations stayed at in dispute.

This changed in 2018, when the Prime Minister made approaches to Eritrean President President Isaias. The two signed a statement that the hostilities was concluded – a move that earned the Prime Minister the international recognition.

The both administrations were then partners in the country's 2020-2022 civil war in the northern region.

However relations have since broken down once more.
